The origins of the prayer to Our Lady of Perpetual Help
This Marian invocation comes from the image, painted on wood, of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in her arms, representing the protection she gave him as a child until the day of his sacrifice, demonstrating in this iconography the security of protecting her Son and the help she represents for everyone, which is why she is called the Virgin of Perpetual Help.
The icon was painted, probably between the 10th and 11th centuries, and is a copy of another much older one, possibly from the early years of Christianity, kept in Rome, in the church of San Alfonso del Esquilino, whose devotion predates the centuries mentioned above, but which has been revived since the end of the 19th century, thanks to the Redemptorist Congregation.
In this image, called the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, we see the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, as messengers of God, showing the Child Jesus the instruments of his future sacrifice, the Cross, the staff wrapped in vinegar, for which he is seen trembling, one of his sandals falls off, and the Virgin is shown helping him by holding him with her right hand, to which the Child Jesus clings in an attitude of seeking security.
In this image, the Virgin Mary is shown giving security and protection in the face of the sufferings and hardships that will surely befall her son Jesus Christ, showing us that she is always ready to offer us her support, a helping hand and security. The churches dedicated to her are called Churches of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and can be found in various countries of the Christian tradition.
The Patronage of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
The Virgin of Perpetual Help is the patron saint of those who work or are insurance agents, she is also the patron saint of the Republic of Haiti and of countless peoples of the world, churches dedicated to her are scattered throughout the length and breadth of the planet, her miracles are related to imminent dangers, she helps us in calamitous situations and her celebrations are on 27 June.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Venezuela
Every day at dawn it is certain that in some corner of Venezuela a prayer is said to the Virgin of Perpetual Help, who is venerated with great fervour in the Andean region, in the states of Merida, Táchira and Trujillo, her Venezuelan devotees are spread throughout the country, there is no church or house in any town of the country where the iconic image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is not found.
In the city of Maracaibo, there is the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help; in Mérida, the imposing Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help; in Caracas, her fervour is strong in the Church of Paguita; other Venezuelan cities with churches dedicated to her are Barquisimeto and Valencia; her miraculous work stands out in the city of Turmero and in San Antonio de los Altos.
The Prayer to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and her miracles
Her miracles are numerous, and it is not for nothing that cities such as Bombay, Baclaban, St. Louis, Boston dedicate a perpetual novena to her every day, and these are events with massive participation.
The testimonies of her miracles are that oil gushes from her image and this substance has healed countless people of many diseases such as terminal cancer, blindness, heart problems, AIDS, arthritis and many other ailments.
According to the testimonies of the faithful in churches and places where miracles have occurred, her presence is indicated by the scent of roses and her message is to maintain family unity, pray the Holy Rosary as a family, know how to forgive, help those in need, strengthen spirituality, follow Jesus Christ in all his teachings, pray much for peace in the world, among other requests that Our Lady of Perpetual Help makes of us.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the Redemptorists
The Redemptorist missionaries, followers of our Saviour Jesus Christ, are evangelisers who are deeply involved in the social problems of the communities in which they live. In the 19th century, the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer rediscovered the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rome and built a church for it on the site of the Church of St Matthew.
In 1863, the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was presented to Pope Pius IX, who, as a devotee of the Virgin Mary, exhorted the Redemptorists to spread her devotion everywhere, a work they carried out to the full, and so, through the efforts of this Congregation of Redemptorists, we have the grace to make our prayer to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
