History and biography of Saint Onofre
According to ancient accounts, Saint Onofre was born in ancient Abyssinia, a country now known as Ethiopia, in Africa, although it is also said that he was born in Egypt around the year 320. He was the son of a king who, doubting his paternity of the child Saint Onofre, put him to the test by throwing him over a fire, and miraculously, thanks to his guardian angel, he came out unharmed (see; Guardian Angel Prayer for Children).
After witnessing this miracle of God, his parents converted to Christianity and baptised him San Onofre, a name that refers to someone who is always good or brings good things. According to the stories, during his childhood, not only was he recognised by the king as his legitimate son, but the Virgin Mary also saved him from the ravages of a famine that devastated the convent where he spent his childhood.
As a young man, because of his religious vocation, Saint Onofre was sent to be educated in a monastery in the region of Thebaida, in the south of Upper Egypt, near the city of Thebes, now Luxor, in the Eremopolites Monastery of Christian tradition, where he came to know the life of hermit saints such as Saint John the Baptist, who lived far away, living on insects and honey, but worshipping God and going out to perform the first sacraments of baptism.
It is very likely that from his youth he was also interested in the life of the prophet Elijah, whom God nourished through one of his archangels when he was retired in a cave after defeating the idolatrous Jezebel. This biblical story inspired Saint Onofre, who, when he was a little older, decided to go to the Egyptian desert in search of what we know today as spiritual retreats, made by saints such as Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
Although spiritual retreats are more recent, a practice carried out by the first Christians such as Saint Benedict of Nursia, 480-547, it was the first prophets such as Moses and Saint Elijah, Jesus, who practised such a practice, classifying themselves as temporary hermits, but Saint Onofre sought to be a permanent hermit, remaining without human contact for several decades, which is why he is known as Saint Onofre the Hermit.
In search of a true spiritual devotion to God, Saint Onofre went to the Egyptian desert, leaving the monastery forever with the hundred or so monks who accompanied him. It is said that on his journey he was accompanied by a light or an angel which led him to the house of a hermit, who greeted him and told him that God had told him of his arrival, and then led him to a hut under a palm tree.
This old hermit became San Onofre’s only occasional companion for thirty years, and was his spiritual guide, teaching him how to live a life withdrawn from the world. After the death of his spiritual guide, Saint Onofre had no human contact for 30 years. Legend has it that God, in His great mercy, saw that he was suffering from constant hunger and thirst and performed a wonderful miracle for him.
God made the palm tree that shaded his hut or cave produce dates every day, and an angel supplied him with wine, although other accounts say it was bread and water that appeared daily at the foot of the palm. This miracle led Saint Onofre to consecrate himself to God, to do penance and to pray daily to the Most High in gratitude for his salvation from hunger and thirst.
The life of Saint Onofre is narrated by a monk called Pafnufio, some historians say it was Saint Pafnufio Abad (251-360), patron saint of lost objects, who was a follower of Saint Anthony Abad, a hermit monk from Egypt, who found him in the desert, looking for exactly this type of hermit to see if they had really reached the spiritual perfection he longed for.
St. Paphnufius relates that after walking for several days in the desert, he saw a man with an unpleasant appearance, whose head of hair covered a large part of his body and who wore palm fronds as a garment around his waist; Paphnufius was very frightened and, fearing for his fate, he climbed a nearby hill, but St. Onofre, who was the man he had seen, approached the hill and said to him: “Follow me, for I am with you: “Follow me, for I am with God”.
On hearing this, Pafnufio approached Saint Onofre, who took him to his hut and gave him the food that God, in his infinite mercy, gave him every day. Pafnufio asked Saint Onofre to tell him about his miraculous way of living in communion with God in that desolate place, and he agreed to tell him his story, which was then spread in the nearby monasteries and has now spread throughout the world.
St. Onofre, in addition to the story of his life, told St. Paphnufius that whoever helped a beggar or a hungry person with food and invoked his name would help his soul not to suffer at the time of the Last Judgement, and whoever remembered him, St. Onofre, would also help him not to fall into bad temptations, since he always prayed to God to do these miracles for people of good will.
Pafnufio tells us that St. Onofre died shortly after his death, that at the hour of his death angels sang in heaven and that tame lions accompanied him to his burial. It was St. Paphnufius who managed to write down the whole of St. Onofre’s life, from his childhood, his youth and the long penance he lived to attain the sanctity of spiritual perfection.
The feast of Saint Onofre is celebrated every 12th of June, his devotion has been authorised since ancient times by the Catholic and Coptic Churches, he exercises his patronage over those who work with hair, hairdressers, barbers, stylists, weavers, the lonely, the unemployed and those looking for a home. Towns, cities and churches bear his name as a sign of their devotion to this legendary saint.
In his iconography he is represented as an old man with long white hair, holding the Holy Cross and the Rule of Saint Anthony, accompanied by a human skull, a palm tree or some dates. Pafnufio says that after the death of San Onofre, his hut and the miraculous palm tree disappeared without leaving any trace of his presence, so he left the place to write the extraordinary story of San Onofre the hermit, the anchorite.

How to make a ritual offering to San Onofre
Since the birth of Catholicism, San Onofre has been considered a saint full of mysticism, capable of achieving true miracles; to obtain them, simply dedicate a prayer, made with all faith, he will listen; but if you want to strengthen the feeling of faith towards San Onofre, you can perform the following ritual, which includes making offerings, with which you can attract health, money, love and whatever you want,

In a safe place, in front of the image of San Onofre, place a yellow candle, on which you have smeared real honey, near the candle, without touching it, write your petitions on a piece of paper, also yellow, then light the candle, if you have cinnamon incense it is even better, read your petitions, then say three Our Fathers, the Hail Mary and make the Holy Cross.
Fold the paper with your requests and place seven coins of the highest denomination on it, say a prayer to San Onofre, then extinguish the candle and repeat the ritual until the following night, except that you take the coins and exchange them for new ones, and the ones from the previous night you give to a beggar, along with a piece of good bread, as an offering to San Onofre, who loved the poor and the needy.

The miracle of Saint Onofre the Hermit
In his story, told by the monk Pafnufio, one of the first miracles made possible by God is told, since at his birth his father, an ancient Ethiopian king, made him walk through fire to prove that he was his son, but thanks to the power of God he was saved from the flames unharmed, after this event his parents converted to Christianity (See; What does Christianity teach).
Among the miracles achieved through his intercession before God is the ability to help find a home, because in the desolate desert where he spent most of his life, God provided him with a hut to live in, although some authors mention that it was a cave where this hermit saint lived, so those who need to find a home often pray to him for this purpose.
San Onofre is also able to put an end to famine or lack of food, because God provided him with food for the rest of his life, consisting of bread, water, wine and honey, and the angels gave him communion. His miracles have to do with the protection of the weavers, since his only clothing consisted of interwoven palms that covered his waist, and his long hair covered the rest of his body.
He is also the protector of widows and single people or those who live alone; although these are the miracles most attributed to him, prayers for the cure of illnesses have been very effective.
His feast day is 12 June, the possible date of his death in 400 AD. There are numerous people, towns and cities that bear his name in homage to his miraculous gifts, which continue to favour all those who pray to him with faith and humility. He invites us to follow his example of mercy towards others with the words he said to St Paphnufius: Follow me!

O God, for whom nothing is impossible, I ask you, in this hour of my ruin, let Divine Providence come into my life, I ask you, with humility, without intentions of greed or avarice, to allow, with your holy goodness, that Saint Onofre, the saint I adore, fills me with money and abundant treasure, I implore you, so that I may maintain and support my beloved family, I promise to use it only for good. Amen.
San Onofre, Saint, who nourished yourself with honey, water and bread, I ask you, with healthy humility, to intercede in my name and on my behalf before God, our Lord, manage to let money flow to me legally and freely, allow me to open my ways to do business that will give me enough money, I ask you without malice and much less greed, I promise to continue praying to you and praising God every day. Amen.
Jesus Christ, my beloved Saviour, with a heart full of humility, I ask You to hear my prayers, which I make in this simple prayer to Saint Onofre, my beloved saint, to whom I turn to ask Him, as the protector of the unemployed, to help me, with the grace of God, to find a job to cover my needs, to dignify my life and not to depend on anyone, but only on Divine Providence. Amen.
St. Onofre, I humbly ask you, together with St. Cajetan, patron saint of the unemployed, to help me in these dwindling hours and, through his intercession before Jesus Christ, our pious Redeemer, to grant me the miracle of finding a good job that will provide me with abundant daily sustenance, and I humbly ask you to intercede for me and to forgive me my faults out of charity. Amen (See: Prayer to St Cajetan for urgent work).
Prayer to St Onofre for a house of my own
Before your venerated and holy image I pray today with the certain hope, San Onofre, that you will help me to have a house of my own, I humbly ask you to give me shelter and to see my family grow in healthy peace, Saint, intercede for me, in this pious favour that I ask you, I implore you, through our Lord Jesus Christ, to you holy blessed by God, in whom I always have great faith. Amen.(See;Why do Catholics worship images?)
Holy One, who, thanks to the goodness of God who gave you the shade of a slender palm tree, covered yourself from the fierce sun, help me from this difficult situation of not having a house of my own where I can live in comfort without anyone disturbing my healthy peace; give me the joy of being able to say that this house belongs to me and my family; free me from living without a roof, from being in a place without any right of ownership, I implore your charity. Amen.
Prayer to San Onofre Santeria
There are several Catholic saints who have syncretised with the Yoruba deities who are the protectors of those who practise this religious current inherited from the colonial period on the American continent, although these practices are not shared by the Catholic Church, which considers them a form of idolatry, their use is widespread among peoples of African heritage. (See; Why Catholics believe in saints).
As long as the potential of Santeria’s magic is used for the good of the people, without the intention of sinning, the syncretism between the saints and the Yoruba images should not be in danger of damaging our Catholic faith and principles. San Onofre is also part of the Santeria prayers to increase the attainment of their favours, with him, it seems, corresponding to the deity Bara Adague, Lord of the Roads.
Holy, exalted, exalted your name to the heavens, I invoke you, with humility and care, with faith Bara, Adague, so that you clear my roads and my desires are fulfilled, I light this yellow candle so that together with Eshu, Orisha Oddé, you attract to me all the happiness and money I need to cover my needs, I pray you, San Onofre, hear my humble prayers. Amen.
What is Saint Onofre good for?
This is the saint who helps us to solve many of our most pressing problems, the masses and prayers that we consecrate to him will have miraculous effects that will alleviate our worries, his effective intercession before God, Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary has been proven since the earliest times of Christianity, that is why the Catholic Churches allow the permanence of his images in their sacred temples.
He is San Onofre, the saint who saves us from want, from lack of work, who gives us happiness and abundant fortune, who saves us from painful illnesses and who opens the way for us to find our own home. With prayers, rituals and novenas, we can make his pious and kind intercession work for us before God who can do all things, and his example of love for God helps us to be good Christians.
