At the beginning of the millennium, the celebration of Santa Muerte was suspended in Mexico, one of the reasons given by a section of the Mexican community being that it goes against the aims of the country’s religious centres because it is also associated with illegal business and prostitution, places where it is commonly worshipped.
Nevertheless, this worship should not be the object of judgement, we must not forget that the religious beliefs that inhabit each being should be individual and sacred, worthy of the respect that free will deserves, where the person is conscious and responsible for his or her own ideals.

History
Among the different histories that have given rise to the resulting mishmash that is religion in Mexican culture today, we find that Santa Muerte has a long evolutionary process in which it can be divided into several stages that mix the Catholicism of the colonial era, the pre-Hispanic culture and the development process of the country itself, which has varied the celebration depending on each transcendental moment.
Later, in this transition that Santa Muerte underwent, the delinquency and social marginalisation of a sector of the Mexican population adopted the image and made it even more part of their culture, attributing to it characteristics in dress similar to those of that sector.
In pre-Hispanic Mexico, “Mictlantecuhtli” and “Mictecacihuatl” were the names of the god and goddess of death who “administered the region of the dead”, which, according to belief, was the trance through which the deceased passed on the way to a divine encounter with God.
The path was described as stormy and difficult to cross, and there was also a river that could only be crossed by those accompanied by the dog sacrificed on the day of the person’s funeral.
Similar to Santeria, which developed in Latin America, this belief adopted various customs and beliefs from the Catholic Church, transforming them into the image known today as Death, with colourful flowers and garments similar to those of the Virgin Mary.
If she is female, she is dressed in a tunic and a scythe. The curious thing about this rite is that it is similar to the offerings made by the dead to the guardian of the underworld on the altar of Santa Muerte.
Another continuation of these pre-Hispanic beliefs is the Day of the Dead, which also revolves around the beliefs inherited from “Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl”, in which people toast, sing, eat, enjoy and give thanks for the lives of those who are no longer alive.
Family and friends decorate the places frequented by the deceased as if they were their own homes, with colourful flowers and exuberant costumes.
What we know today as Santa Muerte had its first appearance in the garden of a Mexican citizen who saw the image of Death silhouetted on the boards of his hut, immediately went looking for witnesses to its appearance and asked for it to be canonised, but the local church disagreed and labelled it the living apparition of Satan.
As a result, the same citizen informed the surrounding area about the cult that had begun on the day of her apparition, a cult that has grown out of custom in many families who are devoted to this image and believe in its miracles.

The most common requests made to Santa Muerte are for people in extreme health conditions, or those who are exposed to danger and crime on a daily basis.
