Many people ask how many books are in the Christian Bible used by Evangelicals.
Every day we see new Bibles appearing on the market that we do not know, nor do we know where they come from.
In the past, only the Reina Valera Bible and the Catholic Bible were known.
Then came the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Mormons.
But now there are many Bibles, a whole repertoire to choose from.
Not surprisingly, since the Bible is the best-selling book, it must be very lucrative to produce one.
Besides, these new versions are like books, they become fashionable and everyone talks about them.
And just like a bestseller, everyone wants to have one in their library.
Now there are different kinds of Bibles, you can buy them with or without a concordance.
Study Bibles, Promise Bibles, there’s even one that comes with four versions in one for comparison.
This is all very well for us, because the more explicit the Word of God, the better.
The question is, are you buying the Bible to feed yourself with it, or just to add to your library?

how many books is the christian bible?
Before we know how many books the Christian Bible has, we need to know that it is a collection of texts.
In ancient times there were several separate documents written in Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic.
These were kept for a long time, until the Old Testament was formed, and some time later the New Testament.
The Old Testament
Mostly tells the story of the Hebrews.
It goes from the creation of the world to the announcement of the coming of the Messiah.
It is the first covenant or pact that God made with the people of Israel.
It contains 39 books, divided as follows
Pentateuch
As the name suggests, these are the first five books of the Bible.
The Pentateuch explains why God chose Israel as his people and what he did with them.
Moses was the main protagonist of this story, as he was the one who led these people under God’s direction.
He was also their prophet, the intermediary between God and his people, and therefore the one who wrote the Pentateuch.
You could say that it is a bit like his biography, because he was an eyewitness to all the events.
That is why these five books, or the Pentateuch, are accepted by different religions.
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy are the books that make up the Pentateuch.
Historical Books
These books tell the story of the formation of the people of Israel.
In the historical books we discover the history of the reign of David and the prophet Elijah.
It is clear that God fulfils all His promises, and the only thing He expects from His people is obedience and faithfulness.
The historical books include
Joshua
He and Caleb were the only Israelites to see the Promised Land.
He also led the people into their new home and taught them to worship God.
Judges
Here we discover the story of 12 men and Deborah who were the judges of the people of Israel. See how the Catholic Bible is divided.
Ruth
This is the story of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi, the transition from judges to monarchs.
Her story ends with her marriage to Boaz, and from her line comes King David.
Samuel 1 and 2
He was the last judge of Israel.
He was consecrated to the service of God from a very young age, and God used him to lead his people.
1 and 2 Kings
In this book, as the name suggests, we learn about the history of the kings of this people.
Here we see how some of them did not follow God’s will and the consequences they had to bear.
Chronicles 1 and 2
In this book, its author, Ezra, is determined to maintain Israel’s identity as God’s people.
Ezra
When the people of Israel return to Jerusalem, it is Ezra who leads them in rebuilding the temple.
Nehemiah
This is the story of the people of Israel trying to stabilise themselves in Jerusalem.
Esther
It is the story of a young Jewish girl who, as queen of Persia, intervened to save the Israelites.
The historical books are followed by the poetic books, the major and minor prophets.
This is how the 39 books of the Old Testament are divided.
To find out how many books there are in the Christian Bible, we need to look at the New Testament.
New Testament
In this part of the Bible we find the birth of Jesus and all his teachings.
It also tells us all about the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus.
It contains the history of the apostles and their letters.
In these books we discover God’s new covenant with his people, which is now the Church.
There are 27 books, arranged as follows
The Gospels, consisting of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which tell of the life and ministry of Jesus.
Then come the historical books (Acts), which tell the story of the birth of the Church.
There are also the Pauline epistles, consisting of Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, and Colossians.
Ephesians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy and Philemon.
The General Epistles are also part of the New Testament, with the books of Hebrews.
James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2 and 3 John and Jude.
And finally, its only prophetic book, the Book of Revelation.
As we have seen in this reading, there are 66 books in the Christian Bible.
