The Virgin of Solitude is one of many Virgin Marys, among many others, such as the Virgin of Carmen, who play a role in the city where they appeared, changing the lives of those who were chosen for these apparitions and also of the faithful devotees who follow and venerate them today.
This virgin is related to the loneliness that Mary, the mother of Jesus, felt when he was crucified, she was in complete loneliness and sadness. The way in which this Virgin appeared is not like the previous ones, usually they always appear with bright light in the form of people, like the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal, they speak and transmit messages that must be taken to humanity for salvation, but the Virgin of Solitude arrives in a surprising way, in a box carried by a mule that later dies, bringing only her face and hands.
It is a virgin venerated in Mexico and many other countries, including Venezuela, as well as the virgin of Chiquinquira, it is the representation of the Virgin Mary in her pain for being alone when our Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary for all of us. Watch this video
History of the Virgin of Solitude
This Virgin appears in Oaxaca, which was founded in 1532 and whose inhabitants were considered idolatrous for worshipping the cacique, governors among others, it was difficult to catechize them, this problem persisted for years where there was not a minimum of worship and exaltation for what really should be as it is God, a normal and ordinary day comes unexpectedly and as never imagined the Virgin of Soledad to bring light and a path of devotion to her, as well as the Virgin of Aranzazu.
At that time, the means of transport to carry the packages were scarce, so mules were used, this image, coming from Guatemala, had to pass through the port of Veracruz in Mexico, the mule that carried the image was lost and it joined another group of mules that were also carrying goods, but with the destination of the city of Oaxaca, The owner of this herd of mules was surprised to see the mule in his group and, seeing that no one was looking for a lost mule at the time, he allowed it to join them and they followed the destination they were carrying.
They arrived in Oaxaca, which was the final destination, and at that moment the frightened man looked for the authorities because he did not want them to think that he had stolen this mule with this load, the mule, exhausted by the weight it was carrying, fell near the entrance to the Ermita de San Sebastian and there was nothing and no one to lift it, when they saw this they decided that the mayor of the city should be present to unload the box and in his presence to verify what it contained. The load was lowered and at that moment the mule was lifted, but a few minutes later it fell dead.
The authorities, in the presence of the mayor, opened the box and examined its contents, and to their surprise they found an image of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the face and hands of the Virgin Mary, and a label with the words “Our Lady of Solitude at the Foot of the Cross”. By order of the bishop, the hands and face of the Virgin Mary were to be placed in the hermitage of San Sebastian and the image of Jesus Christ in the hermitage of Santa Veracruz, which was done and we waited to see if the owner of these sculptures would appear. This image has never been claimed, there have never been any reports of lost goods, let alone people looking for them.
This is why it is considered to be an apparition and a way of showing these people that they should be faithful followers and convert from their evil ways, just as the Virgin of Lourdes showed, the Virgin of Soledad came on a long journey to stay in Oaxaca, where a beautiful baroque temple was built where she is venerated. Most worthy Mother of God, who, standing by the cross of Jesus, your Son, saw him in sorrow, in pain, in agony and dying,

The meaning of the Virgin of Solitude

Mary’s solitude represents the total absence of man when he refuses to accept Christ as his Saviour, when he is far away, and she comes to represent that mother who, like the Virgin of Loreto, seeks her children by all means, even those who are on the wrong path, so that she may straighten their paths, To those who are lukewarm so that they may increase their devotion, to those who are already faithful so that they may continue in holiness and increase it, in conclusion, the Virgin Mary is a mother who looks for her children and gives them her embrace and warmth like a true mother.

O Queen of Seraphim and Crown of Martyrs, crucified as it were between earth and heaven, with no relief coming to you from heaven, nor is there anything on earth that can give you consolation, whose most holy soul, the more enlightened, the more inflamed with love, and the more loving, the more sorrowful, with such extreme loneliness, that by the power of sorrow it placed you in the last disposition for your greater glory, which was the Resurrection of your Son: We beseech you, Queen of Martyrs, by such a great martyrdom, grant us a firm and constant will to seek our only and supreme good, which is God.

Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca
The Virgin of Solitude is the patron saint of Oaxaca, Mexico City, and it is usually in December that a great celebration is held in honour of this patron saint who came to fill with blessings and to forgive the sins of a few who now repent and are her faithful followers. The same happens with the Virgin of Candelaria. Oaxacan ethnic dances take part in these celebrations, and the main attractions are El Tigre, the Danza de la Pluma, the Cuerudos, the Dance of the Machetes, the Jarabe Mixteco, the Chenteños, the Chilenas, the Sones Costeños and the Fandango del Valle.
This virgin is not only the patron saint of Oaxaca, but also of the sailors who adorned her with pearls; it is said that she is the richest virgin in the continent, as she wears a crown of gold containing 2 kilos of this metal and about 600 diamonds; a basilica was also built in her honour, with a very striking baroque design worthy of this patron saint, Numerous miracles have been attributed to the Virgin, making her worthy of the hundreds of devotees who follow her every day and visit her temple, bringing offerings of flowers, plaques and other items as a sign of gratitude for the favours granted by this patron saint. Our Lady of Solitude in Zamora
The image of Our Lady of Solitude is also very popular in Zamora and has many devotees, because it turns out that this Marian devotion, to which numerous miracles and actions are attributed, like the Virgin of Mercy, and which favours all her devotees, is the Mother of the parishioners of Zamora, who offers her love and brings peace to those who are her devotees.
The image that is venerated in Zamora today was donated by Don Joaquín Muñiz and replaced the old one that was taken out in procession. It is considered to be a very beautiful image, with carvings in pine wood, mainly on the face, hands and feet. The image has the normal size of a human being, its dimensions are 1.67 metres high, its features are very real and the parishioners identify themselves and become participants in the suffering that is reflected in the face of the Virgin in this sculpture so beautiful.
