History of Saint Francis of Assisi
Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone was the son of a wealthy merchant in medieval Italy, who lived a life of luxury and extravagance; it was only a momentous event that changed the young Giovanni’s life and changed his destiny forever.
From businessman and faithful servant to his father’s needs, to spiritual master of great renown not only in the history of religion and universal culture, but also in the history of art, becoming the protagonist of scenes recreated by renowned Baroque painters.
Around the year 1200, Saint Francis of Assisi was arrested for a quarrel in which he had been seen participating in a region other than the one in which he lived. At that time, in prison and far from home, his need to reflect on his life led him to analyse that this was not the life he really wanted, that it did not satisfy him spiritually.
With a higher level of consciousness and much humility in his need to reach out to others, St Francis, or Giovanni as he was then called, was released from prison and returned to his homeland with the aim and decision to change.
After this event, Giovanni set out on the path of spiritual awakening, he wanted to learn the teachings of Jesus Christ and take them to every corner of Italy, and he became a more mature and conscious man.
Giovanni was already determined not to return to the life that had caused him so much displeasure.
Around the year 1206, Giovanni went to the temple of San Damiano, the site of his first vision, to pray.
Jesus Christ himself came down in person to give his first message to Giovanni, asking him to restore the rooms of the church where St Francis had prayed, and without a second’s hesitation to do whatever he had to do to make that place a place pleasing to his Lord. That day he was baptised in the name of Jesus.
Immediately Giovanni ran home and sold some things from his father’s shop.
Giovanni was stripped of all the property his father intended to inherit, but his father, tired of his son’s irresponsible lifestyle, decided to stop supporting him financially for “the things that were happening to him”.
The man, who doubted his son’s faith, no longer wanted to see him. Disappointed, he asked him to leave his home.
His decision was more than leaving behind his father and his possessions: he decided to leave behind everything that would take him away from his spiritual evolution and the connection he had already achieved with the Almighty Divine Being.
He then dedicated himself to curing lepers and helping those in need.
Spreading his spiritual knowledge to all who crossed his path, begging everywhere he went and sharing what little he had with others, he was well received wherever he went for help. He made the impossible possible through his divine miracles.
