The devotion to the Virgin of Candelaria in America dates back to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. It is known that this Virgin comes from the Canary Islands, Spain, and it is not known since when she has been prayed in these islands, but as a result of the migration of the islanders since the 19th century, it began to spread more rapidly. O most holy Virgin Mary, in your patronage of Candlemas, Mother of Light that guides in darkness, show us with the intellect our faith, and your light bring out the darkness that hides us, O Mary, you who have allowed yourself to be the centre of God’s promise, who asks you to come out and understand us, Mother of Light that enlightens men, give us the light of life so that we may continue to carry this flame through us, so that your holy word may be done.

Short prayer to Our Lady of Candlemas
There are many prayers to the Virgin Mary. The short prayer to the Virgin of Candelaria was brought by the descendants of the Guanche, the inhabitants of Tenerife and the Canary Islands, and spread throughout Venezuela in the 19th century. There are many variations of this prayer, but this is the most widespread and accepted, as it is a transmission of the original version. The Guanches prayed it every Friday, but on 2 February, the day of the Virgen de la Candelaria. It goes like this:

The Virgin of Candelaria or “Mamacha Candelaria” is the patron saint of the city of Puno in Peru. She worships what in Peru is called Pachamama or Mother Earth and celebrates purity and fertility. In Puno, the celebration lasts for 18 consecutive days and there are performances of more than 200 traditional dances.
