The Virgin Mary appeared to Catherine Labouré, a nun of the Daughters of Charity, in France in 1830, as she had appeared to Bernandette Soubiorus in Lourdes. In her apparition, Our Lady asked her to make a medal with the letter M, with a cross on it and two hearts under the letter, one of Jesus and the other of his mother Mary.
This medal, also known as the “Gospel of Mary”, is designed to contain several dogmas or doctrines of the Catholic faith, namely
- The image of the Immaculate Conception, i.e. the vision of the Virgin Mary conceived without original sin.
- The dogma of perpetual virginity: According to which the Virgin Mary has a white veil that covers her whole body; at the time of Christ, women wore this colour so that they would know that they were virgins.
- Dogma of Divine Maternity: by the use of the letter M, which honours the name of Mary as mother and woman.
- Dogma of the Glorious Assumption: as the Virgin rests on a globe, radiant and splendid as Queen and Mistress of the Universe.
This medal proposes to dedicate oneself to the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary. Pope John Paul II’s prayer to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal
On 31 May 1980, in the city of Lisieux, France, Pope John Paul II offered a prayer of consecration to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. He first prayed a Salve to the Blessed Virgin and then prayed this prayer:
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for all those who come to you! You who inspired this prayer, O Mary, to Saint Catherine Laboure, which is engraved on the medallion now worn and prayed for by countless devotees throughout the world: Blessed are you among all women, Venerable to those to whom you have confessed yourself! The power of God has done wonderful things in you! The greatness of your divine gratitude! And with it, the miracle of your Immaculate Conception! You were united to all the facts of our salvation, and you are united to the Cross of our Lord!
Your heart was nailed to the heart of Jesus. And that from now on, in the greatness of your Son, you will not cease to intercede for all wretched sinners. You watch over the house of which you are the mother. You watch over each of your children. You receive from God all the blessings that come from the rays of light that come from your open hands.
