The exact date of Saint Alejo’s birth is not known, but it is certain that he died in Rome on 17 July 412 AD. There is a lot of vague information about the life of this saint, but there is a poem called “Song of St. Alexis” which recounts various events of his life.
History of Saint Alejo
Saint Alejo was born in Rome, on an uncertain date, into a family of Roman patricians whose parents were named Eufemiano and Agaleno. He was an only child, which made him the progenitor of all his family’s inheritance.
Saint Alejo was soon betrothed to a noblewoman, whom he married at a very young age. Legend has it that on their wedding night, the woman to whom he was betrothed proposed that he flee to escape sin. San Alejo accepted, left his wife and dedicated his life to religion.
Edessa is where Saint Alejo fled to after leaving his wife. There he stripped himself of all the trappings of “nobility” and gave his wealth, jewels and money to the needy. The Saint’s desire to help people was so great that he became a beggar and lived solely on the alms he received.
After this, he began to dedicate himself to helping his neighbour. This was his life’s mission, and he sacrificed any profit he could make for it. His desire is to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, who came into the world to save us.
After seventeen years of anonymity and precarious living conditions, he even lost his identity as Alexius of Rome. It is said that his physical change was so great that no one recognised him in his own home, where he had been taken in as a “taken-in” in what was supposed to be his inheritance. No one could recognise him, not his father, not his mother, and certainly not the servants who saw him grow up, for to them he was just another beggar.
His work in his old home consisted of teaching catechism to the children who lived there. In return, he ate leftovers and slept under the stairs at night. He did not have the minimum conditions for a dignified life, but he did not care, because Saint Alejo was a man of unshakable faith who lived his life to help and to spread the voice of God.
Saint Alejo suffered in his home for 17 years without being recognised. As a human being, he suffered humiliation at the hands of those who were supposed to be his servants. In addition, during all these years he witnessed the suffering of his family at the thought of his disappearance.
For the rest of his life, the saint lived in Rome, his former home. And so he remained until he was found dead in the courtyard of his house with a letter on his chest. This letter described his experiences as a young man and explained his flight from home.
Legend has it that his own father, overcome with shock, wept on Saint Alejo’s chest when he realised that he was his son.
After his death, a number of miracles were attributed to the saint. Shortly afterwards, Saint Alexius was canonised, although there is no exact date as to when this event took place.
