Saint Charbel, as he is known, dedicated his life to the priesthood and lived as a hermit, devoting himself entirely to prayer, fasting, penance and manual labour. His name is Charbel Makhlouf or Youssef Antoun, who heard the call of God at the age of 20.
History and Biography of Saint Charbel
Saint Charbel was the fifth of five children of Antun Makhlouf and Brigitte Chidiac, he was born in a village called Beqakafra on the 8th of May 1828, the family of Saint Charbel was farmers, after he was born just eight days later he was baptised in the church that was in that village and at that moment he received the name of Jusef translated as Joseph.
When three years after his birth his father was enrolled in the Turkish army and this was a war against the Egyptians, he died on his return home, the mother was left alone with the children but she took care of them with great example and discipline, always talking to them about God, after some time Saint Charbel’s mother married again but this time to a very devout man who was soon ordained a priest, explaining that the Maronite rite even if they are married they can be chosen for the priesthood.
From a very young age, Saint Charbel showed his devotion and aptitude for the priesthood, he always helped his stepfather, his life was full of constant prayer, he began to study in the village school, at the age of 14 he began to be a shepherd and at this time he increased his prayer even more.
Charbel used to retire to a cave and spend hours there in prayer, much to the amusement of his companions. This holy man had two uncles who lived as hermits and Charbel often visited them, fascinated to learn more about religious life.
When Charbel reached the age of 20, he was in charge of his whole family and although he was of marriageable age, he felt another call, he kept waiting and after about 3 years he heard the voice of God telling him to leave everything and follow him. He then decided to go to the convent of Our Lady of Mayfouq, where he was immediately accepted as a postulant, and after his ordination he decided to change his name to Charbel.
He was sent to the convent of Annaya, where he took his incredible perpetual vows, and also to the convent of St Cyprian, where he studied philosophy and theology, always leading a life of obedience. In 1859 he was ordained a priest, devoting himself entirely to pastoral work, the care of the sick, assistance and manual labour. His life as a hermit began on 13 February 1875. From that moment on, St Charbel dedicated himself body and soul to prayer, which he did up to seven times a day.
Like St Clare of Assisi, he ate only once a day and wore silicon. He died in the hermitage on Christmas Eve, leaving a unique legacy of service to God. Watch this video.
Life of Saint Charbel
Saint Charbel or better called the patron saint of all those who suffer in body and soul, an impressive man who surprised even after death with his incorruptible body that shed a liquid every year, everything remained intact from his hair to his nails, this Maronite man was born in Beqaa-Kafra on the 8th of May 1828, the place where he was born is the highest that inhabit Lebanon.
This young man, named Yusef Anton Makhluf, was brought up under the teaching of his god-uncles, both of whom were hermits. When he was 23 years old, he decided to secretly leave his home and enter the monastery of Our Lady of Mayfuq, where he took the name of the Syrian martyr Charbel after being admitted to the monastery.
In 1859 he was ordained a priest and decided to settle permanently in the monastery of St Maron in Annaya, where St Charbel had lived continuously for 15 years and was an exemplary monk, a model monk in the strict sense of the word.
Nevertheless, he always longed to leave the monastery.
St Charbel enjoyed singing the office in the choir, working in the fields and even his spiritual life completely, so when St Charbel decided to live his life as a hermit, no one was surprised and he received permission to do so. He placed himself under the obedience of another hermit, usually Maronite monks are very involved in pastoral work, always those who live as hermits are by vocation, those souls who really feel the call and it is always done in groups of two or three.
This is how Saint Charbel began a full life as a hermit, a holy life dedicated to fasting, abstaining from eating fruit, meat or wine, and doing only work sanctified by prayer. For his bed, these people used a mixture of leaves covered with goatskin and for his pillow a piece of wood, for 23 years, and although his life was full of fasting, his appearance was more robust.
He was disturbed when the rumour of his sanctity spread, and in large groups they approached this place to obtain advice from him or even miracles, but in December 1898, in the morning, this chaste man fell ill, and this happened before the celebration of a Mass of consecration, and his companions were the ones who had to help him to get to his place, from where he never left, a paralysis gradually seized him, one Christmas night he died, repeating a prayer.
The miracles of Saint Charbel
Saint Charbel is considered the saint of catastrophic illnesses, his followers and even people who do not know him believe in his powerful miracles as well as the miracles of Saint Martin de Porres.
One of his miracles was reported by a woman called Nohuad, about 55 years old, this woman has twelve children, seven of them men and five women, for the year 1993 this woman presented a hemiplegia in her body on the left side, which affected her leg, arm and mouth, she was immediately admitted to the hospital, because of its seriousness she was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit.
They carried out several examinations and tests, including X-rays, to determine that the hemiplegia was caused by the complete blockage of the arteries on the left side of the brain and also sixty percent of those on the right side were causing this anomaly in her body, they gave her no hope of a cure, rather they only told her that they could operate by replacing those arteries with plastic ones.
What they advised this lady to do was to go home, she had to repeat the X-rays in a period of no more than three months, the eldest son of the lady decided to take home consecrated oil and sand from the tomb of Saint Charbel, with this they covered her body and the lady said she felt pricks and punctures in her arm and also in her leg. After that I was in bed at home, they had to help me with everything, including eating and going to the toilet.
When she had been in the house for four days, a severe headache attacked her and she began to pray to Saint Charbel with great faith, telling him why I am like this, what grave sin have I committed to receive this punishment, I have brought up twelve children with sacrifice and great faith, although I do not want to impose my wish, I want to be cured or that they take my soul, she would accept the plans with resignation.
In the dream she saw a light in her room and two monks came in, one of them was Saint Charbel, he forced his anus on her and told her that he had come to operate on her pain, although she turned around she could not see his face because of the incandescent light that surrounded him, I asked him why he was going to operate on me if it was not appropriate, he said that he would, he was afraid but he was only asking the Virgin for her help.
Suddenly I moved my hand to touch my neck and I saw that it was the hand that I could not move, my leg and my mouth, it was a miracle, I looked in the mirror and I had two wounds on my neck, one on the left side and the other on the right side, the miracle had happened, since then I am faithfully grateful to Saint Charbel and I visit the Wayside Shrine with my children.
A second miracle occurred with Mr. Iskandar Obeid, in fact it was one of the many miracles that were chosen as the first places for the beatification of this saint because of its importance, this man had completely lost the sight in one of his eyes due to a blow, the doctor who treated him said that he had lost his pupil, so the patient was advised to go home and rest.
After seven days he was examined again and still there was no improvement, they recommended more rest but contrary to what they thought, there was no improvement.
The doctors wanted to remove the eye so that the same disease would not spread to the other eye. While this decision was being made, several months passed and during this time the man was hopeful and prayed every day to Saint Charbel for his improvement and he also received Holy Communion.
One day he had a dream and saw a monk talking to him and telling him to go to the monastery and he would be cured, he went and listened to the mass of that day, the eye began to swell more than usual but he still did not want to go to the doctor, he said that St Charbel would take care of his healing as well as when it happens with the prayer to St Jude Thaddeus for difficult cases.
When he woke up he told his wife and asked her if his eye was swollen, she replied that it was and with a smile he said that he was going to look for the image of Saint Charbel, he was cured and since that day Saint Charbel has been worshipped in that house, that is how this wonderful miracle happened, as well as the miracles of Santa Rosa de Lima.
What miracles does Saint Charbel perform?
The miracles that Saint Charbel performs are innumerable, the power given by God to perform them makes the faith of the faithful grow, because he stands out in curing the most chronic diseases that can exist, we can mention paraplegia, diseases without any cure, where the person has lost hope in science and that is when Saint Charbel acts, is the case of the miraculous prayers to Saint George.
It is known of his powerful miracles as San Mateo for a young man of 16 years with a serious blood disease, he travelled from one place to another looking for a solution and found only bad news because the disease was more serious than expected, his cells were damaged 95%, his pain was unbearable, apparently he had leukaemia.
Even so, the family of this very pious young man did not stop praying and asking Saint Charbel for the recovery of this young man who was crying out for a solution to his despair, although he could not get up because of the pain he felt, he kept asking Saint Charbel for his healing, the father of the young man decided to put the picture of this saint under the young man’s pillow and the next morning he had nothing.
When the boy woke up, the picture of Saint Charbel was under the boy’s back and it was full of blood, he underwent further tests where everything came back negative, what seemed to be a serious illness no longer existed. Another miracle of this man who, like San Ramón Nonato, was a faithful servant of the Lord.
Saint Charbel
Saint Charbel was a Maronite who lived his life in the service of God, like the Apostle Paul as a hermit, devoting his days and hours to prayer, fasting and penance. His vocation began at a very young age and he had the example of his stepfather, who was also very pious.
His mother was also very pious and talked to him and his brothers about the religious life, it was when he was a shepherd looking after the sheep that his inclination to the priesthood was more firmly established, a cave served as a refuge for this holy man to pray for up to 7 hours straight, a reason that led to him being ridiculed by his friends, but he ignored these comments, his peace and tranquillity lay in the constant search for God and His things.
When he began his life as a Maronite, he left his home, his family and his life completely to dedicate himself exclusively to the service of God, helping the sick and the needy, and he also dedicated himself to the manual work of the hermitage. He spent years there until he fell ill and died on Christmas Eve.

The incorruptible body of Saint Charbel
When Saint Charbel died, the people and his companions felt very sad, because this man was exemplary in his service to God and his neighbour, so that when they saw him die, they felt sorry for the many miracles that had happened in his name. When he died, he was taken on a very simple stretcher from where he was to the monastery of Saint Maron of Annaya, where, after removing an enormous stone, he was laid to rest.
Some time later, those who were close to the place could see a light illuminating this tomb at night, they decided to check with authorisation and they were able to open the tomb and what they witnessed was incredible, the body of Saint Charbel remained incorruptible, as if he had only been asleep, nothing had happened to him after his death.
Years later the body remained the same and to everyone’s surprise the body of Saint Charbel was exhaling blood, something unusual for those who witnessed this event although they made several attempts because the body did not throw these liquids from his body among them to extract the organs that were in good condition for the moment, I can’t and the body continued to expire these liquids from his body. St Charbel Church
There are several churches around the world dedicated to St Charbel, but the main one is the Monastery of St Charbel in Lebanon, which is located at 1200 metres above sea level, on a hill near Beirut.
It is the same convent where the saint received his priestly garb and where he died on Christmas Eve in 1898. The construction of this convent was completed in 1828, the year in which Saint Charbel was born.
