Saint Joaquina de Vedruna married and had eight children, but at the age of 33 her vocation to service became a great calling and she decided to be the founder of a community called the Carmelites of Charity.
Biography of Saint Joaquina de Vedruna
Saint Joaquina de Vedruna was born in the city of Barcelona on 16 April 1783. She belonged to a family of noble and faithful principles, like the family of Saint Justina, very devout and religious, who taught her to follow Jesus. From a very young age, Saint Joaquina de Vedruna always expressed her desire to serve the Lord, but this desire was not fulfilled at an early age, because at the age of 16 she married a man named Teodoro, who was well educated, very religious and with a great sense of responsibility.
His family was always sustained by the love of the faith and good customs, being very religious, as St Kevin taught his nine children. It was a well-to-do family with good resources, but with the passing of time and the situation of the country, things began to get hard in the bosom of this family.
Teodoro, the husband of Santa Joaquina de Vedruna, was one of those who fought against the French, three of their children died, and in 1816, when Santa Joaquina de Vedruna was only 33 years old, her husband died and she was left a widow, After this event, Santa Joaquina de Vedruna went through hard days, she had to take care of the family and it was the moment to fulfil the longing that she had had since childhood and had not been able to fulfil, and she did it through a foundation that would be called the Sisters of Charity.
The main aim of this foundation would be to devote time to the most needy, like Saint Hilary, to educate the young and above all to help the sick; she dedicated herself to these trades, always giving the necessary time to her children to take care of them and educate them.
This famous work developed and more houses were founded to give guidance to those who needed it and to help their neighbours, as God has established and placed in the heart of every human being. At the age of 33, Saint Joaquina de Vedruna consecrated herself to the service of God and maintained her firm resolve for the rest of her days.
Saint Joaquina de Vedruna fell ill with a virus that affected the whole city, cholera, and died on the 28th of August 1854. She was succeeded by Mother Paula del Puig, who continued her work of redemption and charity. In 1888, the Foundation began to bear fruit and expand for the glory of God. Watch this video.
The miracles of Saint Joaquina de Vedruna
A woman of noble sentiments, she was brought up in the teachings of the Gospel, like Saint Gertrude the Great; from her childhood her greatest desire was to serve God and to be of good will; serving her neighbour was her north; education and good principles made her life a canopy of virtues that would soon bear the greatest fruit.
When she was 16 years old, Saint Joaquina de Vedruna married and they had eight precious children, who also learned from the divine grace of God, because they were taught by their parents, both of whom were very religious and always had the good will to educate their children well.
Saint Joaquina was the great founder of a convent and there she helped those who needed it and also helped the sick, in this place Saint Joaquina de Vedruna gave free rein to her greatest passion, which was to serve God, like Saint David. Unfortunately, she was struck by a terrible illness that ended her life.
Even after her death, she is still venerated as the Virgin of Chiquinquira for her virtues and countless miracles, which have given her a special place in the hearts of her devotees, who follow her and pray to her fervently; Santa Joaquina is known to have cured people with serious illnesses, and testifies to these events, which are of great importance to the Catholic Church.
Marta Casanova says that she suffered from chronic hepatitis, which the doctors considered to be fatal because of her advanced age. Marta was 78 years old and also suffered from other illnesses that complicated the situation. One day, while in hospital, she fervently asked Saint Joaquina de Vedruna for her powerful intercession before God to grant her the miracle of healing.
The next morning, Marta woke up feeling slightly better, and when the doctors carried out the necessary tests, they found that there was nothing wrong with her, that she was in perfect health. Marta, immersed in a sea of tears, expressed her gratitude to this saint who had answered her prayers. Since then, the woman has never stopped praying to her and honouring her for this miracle.
José Asturias, a man of Italian origin, suffered from a serious illness, he was a diabetic and was in advanced studies, one day he had a wound and it became infected to the point that they had to amputate his leg because of this illness, José, immersed in a sea of sadness, implored Saint Joaquina de Vedruna for a miracle in his life because he could lose his leg because of this wound.
It was nine o’clock at night when José asked this woman for a powerful intercession, he promised to be a faithful follower and to increase his devotion, the next morning José woke up and noticed that he could move his leg as usual and that was when he saw that his wound was completely healed, he looked up to heaven and exclaimed: “Thank you Saint Justina de Vedruna for your intercession before God, I love you, thank you for giving me the miracle”.
