Saint Hedwig, daughter of a noble prince called Betoldo, was educated in a convent. From that moment on, her love and devotion to prayer and to the Virgin Mary were evident, and at the age of twelve she married a prince and became the Duchess of Cilicia.
Biography and history of Saint Hedwig
St Hedwig was born in Bavaria in 1174, the daughter of a count called Bertoldo. She studied in a convent in Franconia, her parents entrusted her to the convent, and Hedwig’s sister Gertudris became the mother of St Elisabeth of Hungary.
When St. Hedwig was 12 years old, she married a duke named Henry, who was only 18 years old, they had the blessing of having seven children, when the duke’s father died in 1202, he became the duchy, he immediately founded, with the blessing of his beloved wife, a large monastery of nuns called Cistercians.
This was the first nunnery, but it was not the only one founded by the duke and his wife, who not only expanded religious life in their territory, but also brought Germanic culture to life.
Among the monasteries founded by the duke and his wife were Cistercian, Augustinian, Dominican and Franciscan. Henry was the principal founder of the Hospital of the Holy Cross in Wroclaw and St Hedwig the founder of the Hospital for Lepers in Neumarkt, where she used to go to help the nurses in their daily work.
When their last child was born in 1209, the Duke and his wife took a vow of abstinence for life and, as the story goes, the Duke never wore gold, silver or purple again for the next thirty years of his life. The children they had caused them much suffering, and in 1212 the Duke decided to divide all his possessions between Henry and Conrad, his sons, but neither of them were completely satisfied, they even went to battle.
All that the Duke and his wife, St. Hedwig, had to go through made them reflect and made St. Hedwig detach herself a little from the vain and material things of the world and thus detach herself a lot from them. In 1209, St Hedwig took up residence in the convent of Trebnitz, where she often went to retreat and where she slept in a common room like all the other nuns.
She wore only a tunic and a cloak, for her it was the same winter as summer, she always wore the same clothes, she only covered her flesh with a hair shirt with sleeves and thus passed unnoticed, St. Hedwig always went to church without shoes, so her feet were destroyed because she walked on the snow without anything, but she always carried a pair of shoes in her hands in case someone needed them, she would put them on.
In 1227 there was a very important meeting between the dukes of Silesia and Lasdilao, and between them they organised a defence against the attack of Svatopluk, but he found out and fell on them first, just when the meeting was taking place.
Henry, one of the dukes, was in the bath at the time and managed to escape with his life. When St Hedwig heard what had happened, she went to help her husband, but he had gone off to fight in defence of Ladislaus’s territory.
The victory went to Duke Henry, but soon after a surprise attack killed him, and when Count Conrad imprisoned him, St Hedwig intervened to improve the situation, getting the dukes to reach a mutual agreement to let Duke Henry’s granddaughters marry Duke Conrad’s sons, doing everything she could to avoid bloodshed between these families.Conrad’s sons, she did everything she could to prevent bloodshed between these families.
Saint Hedwig’s husband died in 1238 and was replaced by his son, whose name was the same as his, but whose nickname was the good one. The nuns of the first convent founded by this duke were so shocked by this news that they wept a lot.
St Hedwig was the only woman who always remained calm and encouraged all the others, and when they asked her why she did not complain about God’s decision, she said that our lives are in His hands and everything God does is well done.
St Hedwig took the habit of the convent of Trenèín, but did not decide to take vows so that she could continue to give her possessions to the poor. There are stories of a blind nun who regained her sight when the holy martyr placed the sign of the holy cross on her, of many miracles performed by this saint who dedicated her life to the service of God as Saint Laura, and of prophecies told by her, among which her own death stands out.
When St Hedwig fell ill for the last time, everyone thought that the danger had passed, but the saint asked to be given the last rites. St Hedwig died in October 1243 and was buried in Trebnits. She was canonised in 1267. Watch this video about the story of St Hedwig, this widow who was a saint, let’s learn more about her.

Saint Hedwig’s Day
The 16th of October is the day chosen to honour and glorify Saint Hedwig, a woman who was a mother and a wife and who, together with her
husband, Duke Henry, dedicated herself to the founding of monasteries.
When her husband died, she decided to take the habit and serve God for the rest of her life, dedicating herself to the poor and the sick.
Saint Hedwig was of German origin, she was born in 1174, at the age of twelve she decided to marry Duke Henry who was only 18 years old, from this marriage 7 children were born, they decided to found monasteries and she herself was in charge of helping the sisters in their daily work. Saint Hedwig had the habit of going to church barefoot, so that if she found a helpless person who needed her, she would wear them.
Miracles of Saint Hedwig
Saint Hedwig was a great woman, a mother and a wife who, together with her husband, dedicated herself to building convents for nuns. Like Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint Hedwig was always attentive to helping the most needy. After the death of her husband, Duke Henry, she decided to take the habit and dedicate herself body and soul to the service of God.
God gave her the miraculous gift of healing, and her miracles and wonders are well known: a nun who was blind could regain her sight only by making the sign of the Holy Cross, and many other miracles she granted to her faithful followers after her death. St. Hedwig is considered the patron saint of houses because she granted such favours to those who asked for them.

When we pray, we often do it without thinking about what we are saying; God loves spontaneous dialogues, where a natural conversation arises; we often stammer, and that is more pleasing to God than the very theoretical prayers, no matter how beautiful and celebrated they may be.
The sixth day
It is said that St. Hedwig died 17 years after St. Francis of Assisi, and on this day we invite you to meditate on the following prayer: O Heavenly Father, make me an instrument of Your true peace, that I may bring love where there is hatred, forgiveness where there is only offence, unity where there is discord, faith where there is doubt, truth where there is error, hope where there is no healing, joy where there is thought to be only sadness, and light where there is darkness.
Seventh day
Today we follow the path of prayer and life that our Saint Hedwig led through this novena, let us meditate on the Word of God, let us meditate on the Word of God, let us meditate on the Word of God, let us meditate on the Word of God, let us meditate on the Word of God.
Let us meditate on the Word of God, the Most High and Almighty, to whom we owe all glory and praise forever, let us praise Him above all for His love and His infinite mercy, which leads us to live in peace, and we know that His ways are not easy, but they are the best, let us pray for Your goodness, O Lord, for Your immense love and, above all, for Your infinite mercy.
