The Virgin of Coromoto has been recognised as the patron saint of Venezuela, it is more than 360 years since her apparition, it was on the 8th of September 1952, in a stream in Guanare, where the Indian Coromoto was passing, suddenly the image of the Virgin of Coromoto appeared to him, it was an invocation of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.
The name of this Virgin comes from the same Indian who had the honour of witnessing her apparition, he was accompanied by his wife, his sister-in-law and a nephew, at that moment they could see a Lady of inexplicable beauty who told them in their own language to look for the whites and ask them to pour water on them so that they could enter heaven, she was referring to baptism. On this occasion, the whole tribe was shocked by the event, everyone followed the instructions of the Virgin, except the Indian Coromoto, who went much deeper into the jungle, in view of what had happened, the Lady of Coromoto, patron saint of Venezuela, as she is called, decided to appear a second time to the Indian.
This second apparition has been registered as a day of devotion and worship to this patron saint of the people of Guanare, a basilica has been built in her name and thousands of parishioners come to pray and ask for her favours, to date thousands of miracles have been attributed to the Virgin of Coromoto.
The story of Our Lady of Coromoto
This story begins in a town called Guanera, in the state of Portuguesa, in the year 1951, in these lands lived the indigenous people who decided to go into the jungle and so they could not be evangelised, this tribe was called the Cospes, this tribe was called the Cospes, who were divided, each living their lives separately. Long years went by until everything changed in 1952, when an indigenous man called Coromoto, who was crossing a river with his wife, his sister-in-law and a nephew, saw the Virgin Mary and she spoke to them in their languages and said the following “Go and find the whites and tell them to pour water on their heads so that they may enter heaven”. The Virgin Mary meant that they should be baptised.
At that moment a Spaniard called Juan Sanchez passed by and the Indian told him what had happened. He told them to get together and that he would go to their land and teach them everything they needed to pour water on their heads, a sign of baptism. Mr Juan kept his promise and began the process of being baptised, but Cacique Coromoto did not because he was not the chief and wanted to go to the jungle where he felt at ease and did not have to obey anyone.
Cacique Coromoto fled to the jungle, and it was there that the Virgin made her second appearance on the 8th of September 1952, the Indian was furious and tried to seize her, and at the same time the Virgin disappeared, leaving a parchment in her hand as a sign of her appearance. A child saw what had happened and alerted Mr. Juan Sanchez, who immediately went to the place to check and look for the parchment, which was verified and taken to the church of Guanare, where it remained for a long time in a reliquary.
The cacique Coromoto ran into the jungle and was bitten by a deadly poisonous snake. Because of the seriousness of the matter, he had to return immediately to Guanare, seriously and almost dying, he asked to be baptised, a Barinese agreed to his request and so the Indian Coromoto was baptised. After these events, the Indian Coromoto decided to become an apostle and asked all the Indians to be baptised and not to leave the missionary’s side. The name of this invocation to the Virgin Mary, as well as to the Virgin of Charity, the Virgin of Chiquinquira, the Virgin of Altagracia, the Virgin of the Valley and the Virgin of Fatima, is called the Virgin of Coromoto because of the name of the Indian to whom she appeared. It is 363 years since the apparition of Our Lady of Coromoto in Guanare, Portugal, to an Indian who was the cacique of a tribe called Cospes. Since that day, the life of these Indians has never been the same, and the Virgin was clear when she told this Indian that he needed to be baptised in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In these lands where they lived, it was very difficult to reach with evangelisation, so the Blessed Virgin made her first appearance, where some of the Indians of the tribe were taught and baptised, except for the Indian Coromoto, who decided to go deeper into the jungle.
Even in the darkest part of the jungle, the Virgin makes her second appearance, leaving a parchment with her image as a token; after these things happened, the Indian was bitten by a poisonous snake and it is when he decides in the midst of death to ask for the baptism, which was granted. The Virgin of Coromoto was canonically crowned by Pope Pius XII. On the site of the second apparition of the Virgin of Coromoto, a temple was built to venerate and worship this patron saint of all Venezuelans. Every year the faithful come from all the states of Venezuela to celebrate the apparition of the Virgin who came to renew the faith of the Catholics, more and more miracles are happening and the faithful testify.

Wonders of the Virgin of Coromoto
The patron saint, Our Lady of Coromoto, has been credited with many miracles since her appearance in 1952, one of the most outstanding is when they restored the scale copy of the real figure, which is very small, it was estimated that it would take a few weeks to complete and this process only took 6 days, which is somewhat inexplicable. Although the damage to the image was extensive and even had rust stains on it, they said they would need extensive bleaching and the chemicals they would use would be very strong, but it was not necessary to use them. This is difficult for experts to explain, as the restoration of these works takes time and the use of some tools, such as chemicals, to achieve a good restoration.
It was the face of the Virgin of Coromoto, or rather her eyes, in which the retina and iris are clearly visible on the left, and on the right the iris seems to form the map of Venezuela, and in the centre the image of Jesus.
Milady Bartolovich claims to have been born six months late, and thanks to her mother’s prayers to the Virgin of Coromoto, she is now able to give testimony of her life, and every year she celebrates the day of the Virgin to give thanks for the miracle that was granted. Mrs. Gutiérrez said that she had been bleeding for more than three months and needed a total hysterectomy, the doctors could not control the bleeding and it was the only solution, she decided to ask the Virgin of Coromoto for the favour of healing so that she would not have to go to the operating theatre, the Virgin granted her the miracle because the bleeding stopped and the operation was not necessary. Apparition of the Virgin of Coromoto
It is 364 years since the apparition of the Virgin of Coromoto, the patron saint of all Venezuelans, and the lucky one was an Indian who was the chief of a tribe and whose name was Coromoto. This happened in Guanare, and the message he wanted to convey was clear: to go to heaven, he had to be baptised. At first the Indian did not follow what the Virgin said, but when he found himself in an extreme situation, almost on the verge of death, he agreed to be baptised, and from then on he decided to be an apostle until the day he died.
One of her apparitions was to the Indian on the 8th of September 1952, where she told him in his language to look for the whites and ask them to pour water on his head as a sign of baptism, the second apparition was to him after he refused to comply with this request, this image was engraved on a canvas after the Indian tried to catch her and she disappeared. Relic of the Virgin of Coromoto
The image of the Virgin of Coromoto was left on a canvas during the second apparition of the Virgin of Coromoto to the Indian. It is considered a relic and we can see it in all its splendour thanks to a replica made much larger than the original, which was extremely small.
It has undergone several restorations due to climatic changes and the damage it has suffered, so it was necessary to subject the relic to repairs approved in this case by the competent ecclesiastical authorities, and now we can clearly see the image of this patron saint in the basilica built in her honour.
Sanctuary of the Virgin of Coromoto
The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Coromoto is known as a beautiful place that was built with the purpose of venerating this patron saint, it is located in Portuguesa very close to Guanare, which is the capital of the state, this sanctuary was baptized as a minor basilica when by disposition of Pope Benedict XVI in the year 2007, this beautiful construction had several interruptions in its construction, but finally on February 10, 1996 Pope John Paul II blessed and inaugurated this new temple.
As we know, it was built on the site where the second apparition of the Virgin of Coromoto took place, it has three altars, two that are on the sides of the temple and one called the main altar where we can find the Virgin of Coromoto sitting on her throne, it also has an area where the relics are kept, among them the image where this image was seen for the first time in her second apparition.
It is a very beautiful structure and houses about 2500 people, it has beautiful and colourful stained glass windows that make it much more splendid, around the temple there are ponds and gardens that make it pleasant and attractive. Watch this video.
Monument to the Virgin of Coromoto
There are several monuments dedicated to the Virgin of Coromoto, which exalt and recall the importance of her apparitions in her land. The parishioners visit them and leave flowers in her honour to thank her for the favours she has granted them. They are monuments built with devotion and love, and every year the faithful touch them and make the sign of the cross as a sign of faith and respect for the patron saint of all Venezuelans.
