Legend has it that the statue of the Virgin of Regla was commissioned by St Augustine (354-430) and taken by St Cyprian, a deacon, after Augustine’s death and during the Vandal invasion of the southern coast of Spain.
The statue found a new home in the port town of Chipiona and was venerated in the local monastery by Augustinian canons and African hermits.
The patron saint’s fiesta coincides with the feast day of the Virgin Mary, 8 September. It is celebrated with a procession commemorating that of 8 September 1588, when the proud Spanish Armada sailed for England.
Historians estimate that eighty thousand people take part in this grandiose display of devotion, and that the procession is nine kilometres long. The devotion to Our Lady of Regla reached its peak in the 18th century.
The devotion to “Nuestra Señora de Regla” or “Virgen de Regla” is still practised today, not only in Spain, but also in Cuba, in a place outside Havana called Regla, in Miami, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines and Holland.
Prayer to Our Lady of Regla
O Virgin of Regla, our Sovereign Queen and Mother, Our Lady of Regla, trusting in your motherly love for me, I humbly kneel before you, the source of goodness and mercy.
Be my advocate and protector against all evil and misery, I implore Your infinite mercy never to ignore my sufferings that are currently tormenting my soul.
Show Yourself as a tender Mother. Make me your worthy child so that I may purify my sins by venerating your holy miraculous image of the Rule. Do not refuse my request.
Grant Your generous help and Your holy protection to all of us who have recourse to You. Help me to be a humble and grateful son, always on the path of perfection, following in the footsteps of your divine Son. May I rejoice with you in your holy presence in the eternal glory of heaven. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Regla for Difficult Cases
O most exalted Virgin of Regla, great Mother of the world and of the universe, beginning of life and of the planet, Mistress of all things in the world and Queen of all the seas, thanks to you we are your children and we will always be so.
You who always have an open heart for all our petitions, to forgive us and to understand us, to be the one who guides us in this hard life given to us by the nature you have created.
I come before you, Mother of Mine, with much humility, kneeling down to ask you to help me in this difficult moment that I am going through, which disturbs me and fills me with worries, because I know that if you do not help me, I will not be able to solve it.
(Make your request here), receive from me this gift (light a yellow candle) that I bring to you, my Mother, militant and full of wisdom, with much love and devotion, because through your intercession my prayer will be heard, you will help me and protect me to reach a stable place in life. Amen.

Prayer to the Virgin of Regla to ask for miracles
Our Lady of the Rule, Mother of divine graces and source of our happiness, I pray through your powerful intercession. You who are the treasurer of divine grace. The Most Holy God has made you the dispenser of all His power in heaven and on earth.
The numerous miracles that have been performed prove that you are the remedy for all our ills and the consolation in our sorrows.
At this hour I beseech Your goodness to obtain for me the source of all graces, the grace I now seek. (Pause and mention your petitions) And so may I live and die worthy to enjoy the happiness of heaven with You.
Our Lady of the Rule, Comforter of all mortals, I have my sufferings. I humbly prostrate myself before your holy image.
I acknowledge my failures and my insignificance. Never abandon my petition nor leave me unanswered. In these times of trials that God has ordained to enlighten my blind and stubborn heart, I come to you and tell you my gift.
You are the remedy for all evil, misfortune and misery, the gate to heaven. Comfort me, Holy Virgin. Dry the tears that embitter my existence and grant me the grace I ask for and obtain for me the glory of heaven. Amen.
