Who is Saint Apollonia?
The persecution of Christians began in Alexandria during the reign of Emperor Philip. The first victim of the pagan mob was an old man called Metrius, who was tortured and then stoned to death. The second person who refused to worship their false idols was a Christian woman called Quinta. Her words enraged the mob and she was whipped and stoned.
While most of the Christians were fleeing the city, abandoning all their worldly possessions, a former deaconess, St Apollonia, was seized, the mob beat her and cut her teeth.
Then they lit a huge fire and threatened to throw her out if she did not curse their God. She begged them to wait a moment and pretended to consider their demands. Instead, she willingly jumped into the flames and suffered martyrdom.
Many churches and altars were dedicated to her. Apollonia is the patron saint of dentists, and people suffering from toothache and other dental ailments often ask for her intercession.
She is often photographed with a pair of tongs holding a tooth, or with a golden tooth hanging from her necklace; St Augustine, or St Augustine of Hippo, explained her voluntary martyrdom as a special inspiration of the Holy Spirit, since no one is allowed to cause his own death.
