When children reach the age of First Communion, it is ideal for them to know what the Bible for Catechism children is, so that they know a little more about the step they are about to take.

I recommend our article on the structure of the Catholic Bible as a supplement to this reading.

All Catholic mothers dream of the day when their children make their First Communion.

Some because they want to fulfil what their religion prescribes.

Others do so because it is an opportunity to show off their children’s clothes.

Anyway, when the children reach the age required for the sacrament.

The mothers are responsible for finding the nearest parish priest to tell them where their child should attend the preparation course.

In this course they are taught what the Bible is for children in catechesis before they make their First Communion.

Let us know what catechesis is.

The word comes from the Greek κατηχισμός, from κατηχεῖν, which means “to instruct”.

It is the teaching of the faith to new members who are being initiated into the Catholic Church.

Through this teaching, the candidates discover that it is the children’s bible of catechesis.

Catechesis is a form of ministry because it is a way of evangelising the youngest members of the community.

It is intended for members of the Christian community who wish to receive the faith.

The purpose of catechesis is for the child to learn about the life of Jesus and to profess the Trinitarian faith.

If you would like to know more about the life of Jesus, I recommend our article Who introduced baptism into Christianity.

what is the bible for children in catechesis?

When parents enrol their children in catechesis, it is because they want them to make First Communion.

But most children don’t even know what the word means.

Much less the importance of this sacrament in their lives.

They only know by reference, the celebration of a classmate.

Or a slightly older neighbour whose parents have already celebrated First Communion.

In some countries, this is a cause for celebration.

So they go to great lengths to dress them up in fancy clothes and prepare big banquets to show off to the guests.

It becomes a social act, completely forgetting the true meaning of the step their child has just taken.

First Communion is the sacrament of the Eucharist.

These are the symbols of the body and blood of Christ.

They not only commemorate but also honour the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross.

For this reason, it should be a solemn ceremony, not a social event designed to impress.

The most important thing is that they know what the Bible is for children in catechesis, so that they understand and decide what step to take.

How do you teach the Bible to children?

The first thing children need to know about the Bible is that it is the Word of God.

That although he did not write it with his own finger, he inspired people to do it for him.

It says what God wants them to do.

It also says what he does not want his children to do.

You can explain to your children in a very simple way that the Bible is a gift from God.

That it is a manual (like the ones that come with some toys) that serves as a guide for everything in our lives.

Sometimes we underestimate the ability of children to understand.

And we do not realise that it is we who set limits for ourselves.

Just as we should not leave all the responsibility for educating children to the teachers.

Nor should we leave it to others to tell them about God for the first time.

There are many stories in the Bible that we can easily use to teach God’s Word.

For it is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16.

What is the real problem?

The real problem with leaving God’s teaching in the hands of others is that it will not be continuous.

For example, Catholics baptise their children when they are babies.

But they never take them to church until they are old enough to make their First Communion.

A few years later they return to church (those who go) for confirmation.

And then it is true that they never go to church, unless it is for family reasons (bereavement, baptism or marriage).

But most of these people claim to be Catholics.

And indeed they are, for they have been baptised into this religion and have gone through all its sacraments.

But they have no idea of the life of Jesus, let alone God’s purpose for them.

Therefore, the teaching of the Bible and the spiritual growth of our children should be our responsibility alone.

At least until they are old enough to decide otherwise.

But the Bible says, “If we train a child in his word, he will not depart from it when he is old” (Proverbs 22:6).

Dear reader.

Today we want to urge you to seek the face of God.

We do not have a monopoly on the truth, so we suggest that you read the Word of God.

For it is the Word of God that contains the truth of all things.
